MistAway automated mosquito misting systems are increasingly popular in South Florida — and for good reason. For the right property, they provide a level of convenience and consistent protection that manual barrier spray cannot match. But they are not the right solution for every home, and the upfront cost is significant. As an authorized MistAway installer and licensed pest control operator, here is my honest breakdown.

How a MistAway System Works

A MistAway system consists of several components installed around your property:

The system operates like an irrigation system — automatically, on schedule, with no manual intervention needed. The misting solution bonds to surfaces and provides continuous residual repellency and killing action between cycles.

Cost: What to Expect

System installation
Varies by property size and number of nozzles required. Most standard South Florida lots need 15–30 nozzles.
$1,500–$3,500
Refill service (55-gal drum)
Frequency depends on programming and property size. Most properties need 2–4 refills per year in South Florida.
$200–$400 per refill
Annual maintenance
Nozzle cleaning, tubing inspection, controller check. We recommend at minimum before peak season.
$100–$200/year
Estimated annual ongoing cost
After the initial installation. Compares favorably to barrier spray on large high-pressure properties.
$600–$1,400/year

When a MistAway System Makes Sense

Large properties with sustained high mosquito pressure

Properties over half an acre near canals, lakes, or the Everglades benefit most from automated systems. Manual barrier spray becomes harder to fully cover on larger properties, and the automated system ensures consistent perimeter coverage.

Canal-front and waterfront homes

Some waterfront properties face such consistent breeding pressure from adjacent water sources that barrier spray alone struggles to keep pace. An automated misting system adds a second layer of continuous protection.

Frequent outdoor entertainers

If you have a pool, covered patio, or outdoor kitchen and use it regularly, an on-demand misting system lets you trigger a 30-second treatment 15 minutes before guests arrive. No scheduling required.

Commercial outdoor spaces

Restaurant patios, hotel pool decks, HOA clubhouses, and outdoor event venues benefit significantly from automated systems that provide consistent protection without manual scheduling.

Vacation or seasonal properties

Automated systems maintain protection even when the property is unoccupied. The system runs on schedule, keeping mosquito populations suppressed so the property is protected when owners return.

When Standard Barrier Spray Is the Better Choice

Standard-sized properties (under half an acre)

For most South Florida lots, our 10–17 day barrier spray program delivers excellent results at a fraction of the upfront cost. The return on investment for a permanent system is hard to justify on smaller properties that achieve 80%+ reduction from spray alone.

Before trying professional spray first

We consistently recommend starting with our barrier spray program through 3–4 treatments before considering a MistAway installation. Many properties that initially seem to need a permanent system get excellent results from spray and save thousands in installation cost.

Properties with primary concern for resting-site coverage

Barrier spray penetrates deep into vegetation where adult mosquitoes rest during the heat of the day. MistAway systems primarily treat the perimeter and outdoor living areas. For properties where vegetation coverage is the primary need, spray is more effective.

What We Offer

We install and service MistAway systems for South Florida properties where the situation calls for it. We also refill and maintain existing systems from previous providers — if you have a MistAway system that needs a service visit, refill, or nozzle repair, contact us.

For properties we are currently treating with barrier spray, we will tell you honestly if a MistAway system would make a meaningful difference for your specific situation. We are not in the business of selling equipment to properties that do not need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a MistAway mosquito misting system?

A MistAway system is a permanently installed automated mosquito misting system. Nozzles are mounted on tubing that runs along fence lines, under eaves, and around outdoor living areas. The system holds a drum of mosquito control solution and dispenses a fine mist on a programmed schedule — typically at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active — or on demand via remote control or smartphone app. Think of it as a sprinkler system specifically for mosquito control.

How much does a MistAway system cost in South Florida?

MistAway system installation in South Florida typically ranges from about 1,500 to 3,500 dollars depending on property size, the number of nozzles required, and the complexity of the installation. Ongoing costs include refill service (the drum holds approximately 55 gallons of misting solution) and periodic maintenance. Annual maintenance and refill costs vary based on usage but typically run several hundred dollars per year. For large properties with significant mosquito pressure, the ongoing cost per treatment is often lower than repeated professional spray visits.

How is a MistAway system different from professional barrier spray?

The primary difference is delivery method and frequency. A MistAway system operates automatically on a schedule (usually dawn and dusk) and can be triggered on demand. Professional barrier spray is applied by a technician every 10 to 17 days and penetrates deeper into vegetation where mosquitoes rest. For most standard residential properties, barrier spray delivers better coverage of resting sites. MistAway excels at providing frequent, consistent treatment of the outdoor living perimeter and is ideal for properties where manual barrier spray has not been sufficient alone.

Who should consider a MistAway system?

MistAway systems make the most sense for: large properties (half acre or more) with significant sustained mosquito pressure, canal-front and lakefront homes where breeding pressure from adjacent water bodies is high, homeowners who entertain outdoors frequently and want on-demand control, and commercial properties like restaurant patios, hotel pools, and HOA common areas. For most standard South Florida residential lots, our 10 to 17 day barrier spray program delivers excellent results at a much lower upfront cost.

Do I need to maintain the system between refills?

MistAway systems require periodic maintenance including nozzle inspection and cleaning, tubing checks, drum refilling when solution runs low, and controller battery or power checks. We service existing systems regardless of who installed them and provide refill service for the misting solution drum. We recommend a maintenance check at least once a year and before the start of peak mosquito season in late spring.
