Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about mosquito and pest control in South Florida.
How It Works
How does Mosquito Shield's treatment work? +
We apply our proprietary Mosquito Protection Blend (MPB) — a combination of Citronella, Rosemary, Castor Oil, Geraniol, and Peppermint with a small amount of control product — to your entire property. It kills adult mosquitoes on contact, masks the scents that attract them, and creates a barrier that gets stronger with each treatment. We also use an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) that prevents eggs and larvae from developing into adults.
How often will you spray my property? +
On average, weekly or biweekly — significantly more frequently than the industry average. We actively monitor mosquito populations and weather conditions and adjust your treatment schedule accordingly. We'll postpone applications if heavy rain is forecasted.
How quickly will I see results? +
Most customers notice a 50–60% reduction after the first treatment. By the second treatment (which includes Insect Growth Regulator), you'll typically see 65–75% reduction. By the third to fourth treatment, we usually achieve control of the property at 80%+ reduction.
Do I need to be home during treatments? +
No. We just need access to your property. You'll receive an email notification before we arrive and after we complete the service.
How soon after treatment can I use my yard? +
About 15 minutes — typically by the time our technician has finished and left. Due to Florida's heat and the small size of our microdroplets, the spray dries very quickly.
Safety & Ingredients
When can children and pets return to treated areas? +
Yes. The EPA states our product poses no risk to humans or pets when used according to the label — which we follow precisely. Keep children and pets indoors or away from the treatment area during application, and wait approximately 15 minutes for the spray to dry before re-entering.
What exactly do you spray? +
Our proprietary Mosquito Protection Blend (MPB) is a natural extract blend that acts as a scent blocker and repellant. It contains Citronella (interrupts pheromone signals), Rosemary (long-lasting repellent), Peppermint (disrupts mating cycles), Castor Oil (targets respiratory systems), and Geraniol (larvicide that eliminates larvae). We also add a small amount of control product — less than a shot glass per treatment.
Will the treatment harm bees or pollinators? +
We are bee-certified and do not use neonicotinoids (neonics), which have been linked to Colony Collapse Disorder in honey bee populations. Protecting pollinators is a core part of our approach.
What about mosquito-borne diseases in Florida? +
In Florida, the most common mosquito-borne diseases are West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis (30% fatality rate), and St. Louis encephalitis. Less common but documented in Florida: malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika, and Rift Valley fever — all transmitted when infected people or animals are bitten by mosquitoes in Florida. Regular Mosquito Shield treatments significantly reduce your family's exposure risk.
Weather & Rain
What happens if it rains right after a treatment? +
Our formula includes RainShield technology — a weather-resistant polymer layer that bonds the product to leaf surfaces and other treated areas, allowing it to withstand repeated South Florida downpours. You don't need to reschedule after rain.
Will you postpone my treatment if it's raining? +
We will postpone applications if heavy rain is forecasted at the time of treatment, as the product needs approximately 15–30 minutes to bond to surfaces before significant rainfall. We monitor weather conditions and will proactively reschedule when needed.
Services & Coverage
Where do mosquitoes hide and breed on my property? +
Mosquitoes rest in tall grass, weeds, and brush near your home. They breed in stagnant standing water — even very small amounts. Common breeding spots in South Florida: saucers under planters, bird baths, clogged gutters, pool toys left out, buckets, tires, tarp folds, low spots in the lawn, leaky spigots, and storm drains. We treat your entire property with focus on these problem areas.
What can I do between treatments to reduce mosquitoes? +
Clean gutters, remove standing water from buckets, tires, containers, birdbaths, and pools. Put holes in the bottom of recycling containers. Fill holes in the yard. Install bat houses. When not at home, schedule outdoor activities to avoid peak mosquito hours — usually dawn and dusk. Light-colored clothing and avoiding perfumes also help. Mosquito Shield handles the chemical barrier; these steps close the gap.
Does your service only work on mosquitoes? +
While our product is specifically formulated for mosquitoes, you'll experience significant reductions in other Diptera species too, including No-See-Ums (Biting Midges), Biting Flies, Cicadas, Gnats, Hornets, Moths, Fruit Flies, and Wasps.
Do you offer pest control for ants, roaches, and other household pests? +
Yes. Our Perimeter Pest Control (Pest Shield) service creates a monthly barrier around your home's foundation, eaves, windows, doors, and areas where signs of insects are visible. Our technicians also identify and point out cracks and crevices where insects may enter so you can seal them. Covers ants (including Carpenter and Fire Ants), roaches (including Cockroaches and Palmettos), spiders (including Black Widow, Brown Recluse, and Hobo), spider mites, silverfish, beetles, stink bugs, and more.
Do you offer tick and flea control? +
Yes. We offer targeted flea and tick treatments especially suitable for properties with pets, wildlife activity, shaded ground cover, or heavy vegetation.
Do you offer rodent control? +
Yes. We provide rodent monitoring and control services to help address rodent activity before it becomes an interior problem.
What are MistAway systems? +
MistAway is an automatic mosquito misting system that works like a sprinkler system for mosquito control. It runs on a programmed schedule or on demand, providing an additional layer of protection. These are ideal for properties with persistent mosquito problems or that want continuous coverage.
Do you offer one-time sprays for events? +
Yes. Our Event Shield service provides a one-time spray treatment for outdoor events. With a 15-minute dry time, we can treat your venue shortly before guests arrive.
