What Exactly Are No-See-Ums?
No-see-ums are biting midges — tiny flying insects in the family Ceratopogonidae. The most common species in South Florida is Culicoides furens. They're 1–3 millimeters long, roughly the size of a sesame seed or a printed period. You feel their bite before you ever see them, which is how they earned the name.
Despite being almost invisible, the females pack a serious bite. They use serrated mouthparts to slice skin and feed on blood, which causes the intense itching and raised welts that many people say are worse than mosquito bites. Reactions vary by person — some people barely notice, others swell significantly.
Where Do They Breed in Boca Raton?
No-see-ums don't use the same breeding sites as mosquitoes. They need damp soil and organic matter, not open standing water. In Boca Raton, their primary breeding areas are:
Canal Banks
The damp, organically rich soil along Boca Raton's extensive canal system is prime no-see-um habitat. Properties directly on canals see significantly higher activity.
Mangrove Areas
Mangrove swamps and their adjacent wet soil are classic no-see-um breeding grounds. East Boca neighborhoods near the Intracoastal are more affected.

When Are They Worst?
No-see-um activity peaks during:
- Dawn and dusk — the 30–60 minutes around sunrise and sunset are consistently the worst. They disappear when full sun arrives and again after dark.
- Calm days — no-see-ums are weak fliers. Any breeze over 5–7 mph keeps them grounded. Calm, humid evenings are peak conditions.
- The 1–2 days after rain — new adults emerge from wet breeding sites following rain events, producing visible swarms.
- May through October — coincides with rainy season when breeding sites are most productive.
What Actually Works to Control No-See-Ums
What works, and what doesn't:
Effective for personal protection. DEET at 25%+ concentration repels biting midges. Picaridin also works. Apply before going outdoors around dawn/dusk.
Provide minimal protection at best. The smoke and scent can repel nearby insects slightly, but no-see-ums are numerous enough that they bite right through it. Not a reliable solution.
Cheap and effective for patios and screened areas. No-see-ums can't fly against wind above ~5 mph. A good box fan pointed outward helps significantly.
Standard 16x16 mesh screens don't stop no-see-ums. Replacing them with 32x32 or "no-see-um" mesh keeps them out of your home. More expensive but effective.

Attract and kill many insects, but research shows they kill very few biting insects and many beneficial ones. Not effective for no-see-ums specifically.
