South Florida's climate is paradise for humans and pests alike. Ants, palmetto bugs, roaches, spiders, and silverfish don't have a winter to slow them down here — they're active year-round, and they're always looking for entry points into your home. As a licensed pest control operator with a General Household Pest license (JB313837), I treat homes throughout Broward and Palm Beach County. Here's how perimeter pest control works and why the exterior-first approach is the right one for South Florida conditions.

Why Exterior Treatment Works Better Than Interior Spraying

Most pest pressure in South Florida originates outside. Ants build colonies in your lawn. Palmetto bugs live in mulch, storm drains, and landscape debris. Roaches breed outdoors and move inside seeking food, water, or shelter from heat. Silverfish thrive in the warm, humid exterior spaces under your home's eaves and foundation plantings.

The logical place to stop them is at the perimeter — before they find an entry point. Interior treatment only addresses pests already inside. Exterior perimeter treatment intercepts them during transit. For most South Florida households, consistent perimeter treatment eliminates the need for indoor spraying entirely.

How Pest Shield works: We apply treatment to the exterior foundation, entry points (doors, windows, utility penetrations), eaves, fence lines, and outdoor living areas every 60–75 days. The product creates a treated barrier that pests must cross to enter — and don't survive crossing.

The South Florida Pests That Drive the Most Calls

Palmetto Bugs (American Cockroaches)

Palmetto bugs are the number one driver of perimeter pest calls we receive. These large (up to 1.5 inches) reddish-brown cockroaches are outdoor insects that enter homes through gaps in foundations, under doors, through drains, and around pipe penetrations. They don't infest inside the way German cockroaches do — they're transients looking for water and food. Perimeter treatment is the right tool: stop them at the threshold rather than treating inside after they've gotten in.

What also helps: Door sweeps on all exterior doors, caulking around pipe penetrations, and keeping mulch pulled back 6 inches from the foundation. These structural modifications work with the perimeter treatment to close entry routes palmetto bugs use.

Fire Ants

Fire ants are found on virtually every property in Broward and Palm Beach County. They're aggressive, their sting is painful, and they build mounds that seem to appear overnight. Perimeter treatment creates a barrier around the home and outdoor living areas, while granular bait applied to active mounds in the lawn addresses satellite colonies. Fire ant pressure is particularly high after summer rain events when colonies relocate.

Ghost Ants and Carpenter Ants

Ghost ants (tiny, nearly translucent ants with a dark head) are one of the most common indoor ant complaints in South Florida. They're almost always entering from outside through micro-gaps around windows and doors. Carpenter ants are larger and excavate wood for nesting — in Florida, they often nest in moisture-damaged wood around rooflines, window frames, and fascia boards. Both are covered by Pest Shield perimeter treatment.

Black Widow Spiders

Black widows are common in South Florida — they build webs in low, protected areas like under patio furniture, in garage corners, around outdoor electrical boxes, and behind shutters. Their venom is medically significant, particularly for children. Perimeter treatment addresses the dark, sheltered exterior areas where they establish.

How Pest Shield Fits With Mosquito Shield

These are separate services with different products, different target pests, and different treatment intervals. Here is how they work together:

Service Target Pests Interval Treatment Zone
Mosquito Shield Mosquitoes, no-see-ums, gnats, wasps, hornets Every 10–17 days Mid-height foliage, fence lines, outdoor living areas
Pest Shield Ants, roaches, palmetto bugs, spiders, silverfish, beetles Every 60–75 days Foundation perimeter, entry points, eaves, fence bases

When schedules align, both services can often be performed on the same visit. Many of our clients find that starting Mosquito Shield exposes how much other pest activity they have — the reduction in mosquitoes makes it easier to notice ants trailing across the lanai or palmetto bugs entering through the garage. Adding Pest Shield at that point addresses those gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is perimeter pest control?

Perimeter pest control (also called exterior barrier treatment) applies a protective treatment band around the foundation of your home, along fence lines, and around exterior entry points. The goal is to intercept insects before they enter — stopping ants, roaches, palmetto bugs, spiders, and silverfish at the perimeter rather than treating them once they are already inside. In South Florida's climate, exterior treatment is more effective than interior spraying for most common household pests because most pest pressure originates from the outside environment.

What pests does Pest Shield cover?

Our Pest Shield perimeter program covers ants (including fire ants, carpenter ants, and ghost ants), roaches (including palmetto bugs and American cockroaches), silverfish, spiders (including black widows and brown recluse), spider mites, stink bugs, beetles, and other common crawling insects. It is not a mosquito treatment — that is a separate service (Mosquito Shield). The two services are complementary and many clients have both.

How often is Pest Shield applied?

We apply Pest Shield every 60 to 75 days. This interval is based on the residual life of the treatment product and the recolonization rate of common South Florida pests. Unlike monthly mosquito service, perimeter pest treatment holds for approximately 2 months before needing reapplication. Year-round service is strongly recommended in South Florida because there is no winter season to interrupt pest activity.

Will Pest Shield keep palmetto bugs out of my house?

Yes — for most properties, perimeter treatment significantly reduces palmetto bug entry. American cockroaches (palmetto bugs) are outdoor insects that enter homes through foundation gaps, under doors, and through drains. Perimeter treatment creates a toxic barrier they must cross to enter. Combined with sealing obvious entry points (door sweeps, pipe penetrations, utility conduits), perimeter treatment is the most effective approach for palmetto bug prevention available without structural modification.

Can I combine Pest Shield with Mosquito Shield service?

Yes, and many of our clients do. Mosquito Shield (barrier spray every 10 to 17 days) and Pest Shield (perimeter treatment every 60 to 75 days) target different pests with different products and different application zones. They can often be combined on a single visit when schedules align, saving you time. The services are billed separately. Combining them gives you the most complete exterior pest protection available for a South Florida home.

Is perimeter pest spray safe for my family and pets?

Yes. We use EPA-registered products applied to the exterior perimeter only — not inside the home. Product is applied to the exterior foundation, entry points, and outdoor areas where pests travel. We observe a 15-minute re-entry interval after application. Pets should be kept off treated areas during application and for 15 minutes after. The exterior-only application approach means your family and pets have minimal direct exposure. We are licensed under all five Florida pest control license categories, including General Household Pest.
